As a photographer, every event offers a new story, a fresh perspective, and a chance to connect with people. Recently, I had the honour of documenting Dheeran’s 5th birthday — a heartwarming celebration held at the Rakahanga-Manihiki Association in Cannons Creek, Porirua.

This wasn’t just another birthday party — it was a vibrant gathering steeped in culture, community, and joy. For me, it was particularly special as it marked my first time photographing a Cook Islands community. From the traditional décor to the warmth of the families, the event radiated love, laughter, and colour.

The Rakahanga-Manihiki Association provided the perfect venue — a welcoming space where children played freely, families mingled, and cultural pride was evident in every detail. Dheeran, surrounded by his loved ones, was the heart of the celebration. From the cake cutting to fun games, dancing, and shared meals, every moment was picture-perfect.

What stood out the most was the sense of unity and joy — values that run deep in Pacific Island communities. As a photographer, I was truly moved by how seamlessly tradition, family, and celebration came together.
